FAQ: Listening online

Why does a new window open when I click "listen live"?
In order to allow our users to continue listening even after leaving our site, we open our player in a smaller browser window. This way, you can keep listening no matter what else you're doing online. And, the player window keeps you updated with current artist and title information at all times. If you leave our site and want to return, the links in the player window will bring you right back.

If a new window DOES NOT open when you attempt to listen, check to make sure you do not have any software installed on your computer that blocks pop-up advertising. That software can also prevent the player window from opening. Some personal firewall software also prevents the player window from opening. Any such software will need to be disabled temporarily when you first open the player, and then re-enabled after the player window opens.

The audio player says "playing" but no sound is coming out. What does this mean?
Usually, when the audio player says "playing" but you don't hear any sound, it means that we are in a broadcast "blackout". Due to legal restrictions, radio stations are prohibited from rebroadcasting their commercials online. During commercial breaks, the online broadcast will often go silent. Some stations are also prohibited from rebroadcasting certain syndicated programming and sporting events online. They will broadcast silence or alternate programming online during those times as well.

The audio player says "buffering 00:00" but won't ever connect. What do I do?
If your audio player sticks at "buffering 00:00" but won't connect, it can be a sign of a compatibility issue with your computer and the audio software. Please visit our audio help page for more information about system requirements and ChainCast compatibility.

The audio player says "try again later". What does this mean?
If the audio player says "try again later", it can mean a couple of things:
1. You haven't downloaded the ChainCast plug-in yet. If you don't have the ChainCast plug-in, please contact ChainCast technical support for instructions on downloading the program.

2. The station is having problems with its Internet connection. If you feel that this is the problem, please use this form, and include a description of your problem.

Why am I constantly asked to register when I try to listen?
When using our streaming audio service, you are only required to register once. Once you've completed the form, you should never be asked to register again. If you have already registered, but you are being asked to re-register continuously, it may be that you have cookies disabled in your browser. To resolve this issue, you will need to enable cookies in your browser, and register again. After that, your information will be stored on your computer and you will not need to register from that computer again. You can also skip the registration process and listen by clicking "decline".

What is ChainCast and why do I need it?
ChainCast is a small ActiveX plug-in that works with Windows Media Player. It is required on most Cox Radio stations in order to listen to the live broadcast online. If you'd like more information about ChainCast software, please visit www.chaincast.com.

I've already installed ChainCast, but I keep getting a message telling me to download it? What does this mean?
If you've already completed the installation process, but you're still being prompted to install it when you try to listen, it can be a sign of a compatibility issue with your computer and the audio software. Please visit our audio help page for more information about system requirements and ChainCast compatibility.

I have a Mac. Can I still listen?
At this time, ChainCast is not compatible with the Mac OS. However, Mac users can still listen to our live audio broadcast. In order to listen, Mac users will need to have Internet Explorer 5.x and RealPlayer G2 installed.

FAQ: Rating songs

When I listen to a song sample, then close the window, sometimes it makes my browser crash. Why?
Our "hear it" and "rate it" features utilize embedded Windows Media Player to play song samples. Occasionally, closing the window containing the embedded player while the sample is still playing can cause your browser to crash if you (a) have antivirus software that employs real-time virus scanning and (b) you have Windows 2000. Temporarily disabling the real time virus scan while you listen should resolve the problem. If you encounter this issue on a system other than Windows 2000, or with different (or no) virus scan software, please let us know.
